One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment.
I stole this from another site so will need writing but serves as a good example i think.
The versatility of the equipment means it can continue to challenge even the most experienced Pilates practitioners; often by holding more of the body off the platform or with the springs on a lighter setting, requiring more strength and engagement.
Great for Improving strength — particularly around the core, back, glutes and thighs — flexibility and balance, as well as focus, coordination, posture and body alignment.
I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks.
A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table - Samsa was a travelling salesman - and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer.

Our studio offers a wide range of Pilates apparatus for use in both Small Group and Personal Sessions.
The Pilates Cadillac is a piece of equipment that most closely represents that of a bed with a frame. Positioned on the table part, the client holds either handles or the bars attached to springs of varying tension. The client can also place their feet inside loops that attach to springs to work the lower body. The stable base of the Cadillac makes it less intimidating than the Reformer with its moving parts. There’s very little pressure on the joints because your body weight is supported by the table. In addition, the ideal range of motion in the Cadillac exercises is moderate so as not to over-stretch the joints. Many of the exercises are performed in a seated position or lying down face up, which is grounding both physically and mentally.
Though the basic design is simple, there are myriad exercises that can be performed on the Pilates chair. It is excellent for strengthening the core muscles, of course, and also the arms and legs. Exercises are done lying, sitting, and standing on the chair, as well as from positions to the sides of the chair. One can expect a lot of stability and flexibility work on the chair. It is truly a testament to the ingenuity of the Pilates method to see how many exercises can be done on the Pilates chair.
Joseph Pilates, the creator of the Pilates method, was a beer drinker. Beer was delivered to him in barrels. Once empty, Joe saw an opportunity to play with the beer barrels and its metal rings. He used them to invent a new pieces of exercise equipment. The Barrels, Ladder, Spine Corrector and Small Barrel are used in the practice of Pilates to support the flexion and extension of the spine with gravity.
The Ped-o-pull consists of a base platform and an upright pole that has two springs with handles. Clients stand on the platform, center themselves against the pole and then use the handles attached to the spring to do various exercises. Like many of Joseph Pilates’ pieces of equipment it is simple yet genius, because of its ability to challenge the body to create efficient, balanced movement. The exercises you can practice on the Ped-o-Pull range from simple to quite advanced
Whilst not strictly a piece of Pilates equipment the Swedish ladder bars were invented at the beginning of the 19th century by the Swedish teacher Per Henrik Ling who, when suffering from arthritis, realised the therapeutic potential of wall-bars exercise. They are used simply for climbing and for coordination skills. They are also used by more advanced clients for resistance training, flexibility training or abdominal exercises. Used correctly they can also assist with arthritis in the hands and feet and for addressing scoliosis issues.
A traditional piece of equipment originally designed by Joseph Pilates, no better tool exists for developing scapular stability and functional upper body strength, and for improving upper body posture. Great for clients at any level and especially appealing to men, the Arm Chair develops upper body strength with scapular stability, and effectively integrates core and upper body work.
This device works the muscles of the foot—the arch in particular—to aid in alignment, raise arches, improve balance and gait, and work the leg and pelvis. Exercises with this small piece of Pilates equipment can be done sitting or standing, depending on the desired level of difficulty.
The Breath-A-Cizer is an essential apparatus that encourages proper breathing techniques. At one end of this two-pronged device, you’ll find a sturdy metal opening (designed to accommodate a standard straw) located directly across from a rotating metal pinwheel. By challenging yourself to keep the pinwheel in motion using only your breath, you can successfully cleanse the lungs by completely ridding them of air. Not only does this practice open the air passages and encourage deep breathing, it also effectively oxygenates the blood and activates the body’s deep support muscles.
Invented by Joseph Pilates, this apparatus is carefully crafted to ease bunion pain, strengthen muscles, and reestablish proper alignment in the lower body. Malleable toe loops and a professional-grade centre spring make this intuitive device ideal for strengthening both hip flexors and gluteal muscles. By correcting how the foot interacts with the joints and muscles of the hip, weight is able to be evenly supported by the entire lower body rather than being unnecessarily concentrated near the big toe. When pressure is evenly distributed throughout the hips and legs, movements become gentler and more controlled. Practitioners who suffer from bunions will find this device to be an especially important part of their Pilates routine. Combined with your existing Pilates practice, the Toe Exerciser will help lengthen the spine, strengthen the hip, and realign the lower body, leading to more effective movements overall.
The Pilates reformer is a traditional piece of Pilates equipment and the most ubiquitous. The Reformer looks somewhat like a bed with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes or straps and pulleys. The Reformer acts as a frame for the body and allows for easily alignment due to the feedback the body receives from the bed, blocks and resistance bar. The intensity of work can be altered via the spring load and position of the body.
